Lookie-loos? Buyer or Seller? Here’s what you said…

May was a terrific traffic month for us, with 4.2 million visitors coming to the site. But we’re always curious about who’s coming to the site and, of course, how often people are coming back. All of this helps us to better design the site, build better products and generally make Zillow more useful in owning, buying or selling a home.
So… last year we started periodic surveys of our users, asking what brought folks here and if they’re coming back. Here’s what we found after getting answers from 3,400 users between April 1-31, 2007.
- Homeowners! 89% of Zillow visitors own a home, which skews significantly higher than the U.S. adult average of 69%. 9% currently rent.
- Active buyers and sellers: 32% are actively buying or selling a home now; another 32% plan to buy or sell in the next 1-2 years.
- 7% are real estate agents or brokers — which translates into nearly 300,000 visitors last month.
- Other real estate professionals - real estate investors, mortgage lenders, builders, appraisers, home insurance brokers - account for an additional 17%.
How often are visitors coming to the site?
- Pretty frequently. Of the 4+ million visitors in May, nearly all — 86% — visited two or more times the prior month.
- Almost half of our users came 5 or more times in a month, and a quarter of visitors — our most rabid fans — came to the site 10 or more times!
How else do you use Zillow? Are we meeting your current needs, or could we build something bigger or better? Let us know in the comments below or send us feedback.

I’ve never heard of Zillow.com, but you guys sure have a lot of traffic coming to your site, so you have to be doing something right, right? I’m definitely going to do my research. I’m actually looking to buy soon. It’s a big step for me though, so I have decided to wait, save some more money and hope by the time I am ready to buy, the market will have decreased in price. There’s also a show that may interest some of you. It’s a new reality real estate show called Bought and Sold. It airs on Sundays at 10pm on HGTV. You can check it out here for more details: http://www.hgtv.com/hgtv/shows_hbas. I find it very helpful and informative. I work with them, so just giving you the inside scoop. Have any of you seen it yet?

Love lots of stuff you guys are doing.
You say 32 percent of your audience are active buyers or sellers, and 32 percent plan to buy or sell in the next year. I realize that buyers frequently also are sellers, but I was curious if you have a separate number for how many active buyers are reading the site?

Hi Barry,
The further breakout of “active” buyers and sellers is as follows:
14% are actively trying to buy a home
9% are actively trying to sell a home
9% are actively buying AND selling at the same time.
