Zillow Interest Index - Real Estate Popularity from Coast-to-Coast
By: Tommy Unger, Data Analyst | November 13, 2006
As you may have read in our blog last week we’ve just completed our third quarter home value reports. In it, we took an in-depth look at 5 metropolitan areas as well as an overview of the top 36 metro areas in the U.S. One unique element of the national and metro reports is the Zillow Interest Index map. This map helps the reader gauge the popularity of real estate in markets throughout the country. We arrived at this number by taking the number of monthly visitors by county and dividing that by the population of the county. We end up with a fascinating and informative map of the country similar to the maps that the folks over at neighboroo are offering.
Although there are many signs of a real estate market cool down, the popularity of real estate valuation and home information does not appear to be leveling off. From Seattle to San Diego, the West Coast is leading the country in the Zillow Interest Index. The DC-to-Boston corridor is looking popular, as well as most of Florida. Beyond those large areas, you can look and spot the hot cities throughout the nation. Salt Lake City, Denver, Dallas and Chicago are just a few. As you get to more rural areas, the interest level cools off a bit, but exceptions can be found nationwide, from the Rocky Mountains to the quiet towns of New England. Click on the map below for a larger view or download the high-quality pdf.

Interesting, I measure the hits on my web sites, if when they go up about a month later sales go up. I think this may be a somewhat valid measure of future conditions.

If you changed the yellow to blue and the green to red, I believe you’d nearly get an election outcome map
