“Just livin’ the dream,” that’s how my five girlfriends and I felt after signing the lease on our college dream home—a 3,000 sq. ft. picturesque 1916 rental in the heart of the University District. We had grand visions of thematic seasonal parties, a hammock on the front porch, and chic home decor. That dream was shattered after our “welcome to the neighborhood” home robbery, Toilet Bowl Explosion- 2007 and the arrival of our first utility bill. Talk about a hit of harsh reality. Not only does the garbage fail to empty itself, you mean I really do have to turn off all the lights?
This experience has severely scarred my voyeuristic eye and impacted my opinion of this weeks Top Viewed For Sale homes. Suddenly, the 992 sq ft condo in Ft. Collins, CO looks easy to clean and affordable to heat. The front yard of the Oakland, CA listing is small, yet manageable. I could even save money on a gym membership by swimming laps in the community pool near the home in San Diego, CA. While those suggestions are useful, there’s something to be said for abandoning all practicality, moving to Mountain View, CA and splurging on satellite TV.
All I know is that I’m definitely on the steep side of the learning curve to growing up and managing a home, but I guess that’s what college, internships, and your 20’s are all about. At least that is what I keep telling myself.
