Today is Earth Day. Get Your Green On.

Today is Earth Day, so let’s turn our attention to what we can do on a micro level to help save our planet so our kids’ kids’ kids (follow that one?) will have a chance to breathe clean air and eat foods that haven’t been contaminated by pesticides or whatnot. Plastic is the new SUV — reviled and rejected. In fact, the mayor of Seattle is gettin’ mean goin’ green by banning city-funded bottled water. His latest push is adding a 20-cent tax to every plastic or paper bag issued at grocery stores, convenience stores, and drug stores in Seattle. Needless to say, I have started to hoard my paper shopping bags and have them in the trunk of my car in case I need to run to the grocery store. But, sustainability is not just a left-leaning ideology anymore; it’s really impressive what everyone is doing to become eco-conscious.
WorldChanging recently posted a blog on a group of guys who moved a house by pedal-power. It all started when our friends up north, the Human Vehicle Operators of Ottawa (HVOO), built a large trailer bicycle to help pull a Hammond organ on a parade float. Of course, one thing led to another and they were transporting garden supplies for a local community garden, carrying 9 drummers in a peace rally, and experimenting with transporting the trike itself.
For a good scare, take this Eco Footprint Quiz. I’m not sure if it’s accurate or trustworthy, but it’s a fun little quiz to help you understand your carbon footprint. Oh, by the way, guess which appliances use the most electricity in your home?
