Not Exactly Buried Treasure

By: Kristin Acker, VP, Product Teams | May 5, 2008

This past year, my family and I moved into a new home and now that spring has finally broken through, I spent the weekend battling the encroaching weeds in our yard. Despite my heroics, the weeds are winning.

Maybe I have the upcoming Indiana Jones movie on the brain, but I felt like a modern-day

Green Army Men

archaeologist digging through the yard. Every few shovelfuls, some curious item would be unearthed. Mostly it was pieces of broken tile, an old bottle cap, and, of course, a old root of a long-dead tree. One of my sons found the best treasure yet: a green army man like those in Toy Story. I’m sure there are more treasures awaiting me next weekend.

In our previous house, we found hundreds, probably thousands of pieces of broken glass. Our vigilance over 15 years took care of most of them and by the time we left, we’d only find the occasional shard. We asked the former owner (then in her 70s) if she knew where it all came from, but she never ‘fessed up to drinking beers and throwing the bottles against the back fence to see how loud they’d be when they broke, but it certainly looked that way. Actually, I really doubt she would have done this, but maybe her sons did when they were rebellious lads. Or, perhaps previous owners?

Thankfully, the previous owners of our new house don’t seem to be the bottle-breaking types. I’m sure we’ll find some more treasures as we dig through the weeds. Makes me wonder whether anyone’s found real buried treasure in a home they moved into. Does anyone have any buried treasure stories to share?

I have recently moved (with the help of zillow, read about my move here: http://webpoet.wordpress.com/2008/05/03/moving-on/) and have not found any buried treasures - but now I am most assuredly going to start digging. ;)
