Losses Escalating in SoCal Fires

By: Sarah Mann, Senior PR Specialist | October 23, 2007

The wildfires that are raging in southern California are catastrophic.  The number of homes destroyed, people evacuated, and acreage burned is staggering; the latest CNN article notes the following:

  • More than 500,000 residents have been evacuated from their homes
  • More than 1,300 homes have burned to the ground
  • The fires currently threaten more than 56,000 additional homes
  • Approximately 17 wildfires have scorched about 425 square miles so far

I can’t even imagine experiencing this type of loss on such a grand scale and seemingly with no end it sight. The people who live in Southern California can probably identify with those displaced by the devastation caused by Hurricane Katrina. Check out the Google Map image I’ve included, or for even more detail check out this post with a bunch of different maps.  It really shows the breadth and depth of these fires.  I can’t help but think about how much the clean-up is going to cost — the Zindex in some of these areas is over $1 million . And between rebuildingfiremap1.jpg, repairs, and home insurance claims, it will likely take years to sort this all out.

On a personal note, I’ve been keep a close eye on this story as I was planning to head down to San Diego this weekend for a family wedding.  I just learned that the golf resort where the wedding was supposed to be held will now be closed, as it has experienced some damage. Also, the hotel at the resort is currently housing firefighters and others who are helping fight the flames.  After planning and obsessing over my own wedding, I can’t imagine what the bride and groom are going through, and how many others are experiencing the same sort of thing.  You can get over the DJ not showing up (everyone’s biggest fear), but there’s not much you can do when a natural disaster occurs.

What I hope they remember is that at the end of the day, what matters is the people you love are safe.  Our thoughts and good vibes go out to anyone affected by the fires. You are in our thoughts and prayers.
