Going to the Thanksgiving Source: Plymouth
By: Diane Tuman, Content Manager | November 22, 2007

Since it’s Thanksgiving, we thought we’d pay a visit to this holiday’s Ground Zero — Plymouth, MA. In case you forgot the details from your 4th-grade history class, Plymouth is where the Pilgrims settled in 1620 after initially landing in Provincetown, MA, only to skedaddle a few months later after finding life and the terrain a bit daunting on the tip of the Cape. It’s also where the first Thanksgiving was allegedly celebrated, although historic records wrestle with whether Berkeley Plantation, VA, was the site of the first Thanksgiving a year earlier. Which reminds me: Hoboken or Cooperstown?
Skipping ahead to 2007, real estate health for Plymouthonians (or is it Plymouthites or Plymouthinians?) seems to be relatively stable. While the rest of the country has suffered a 5.7% dip in year-over-year value, home values in Plymouth are off by -1.2% (click on the “Cities” tab and scroll down to Plymouth). As I take a look at homes for sale in Plymouth, the Zindex is $332,740, compared to a national Zindex of $244,000. Not bad, Plymouth. But, what are the home values in Provincetown — the city the Pilgrims ditched in favor of Plymouth? It looks like P-town has the upper hand in real estate values with a Zindex of $515,106. And if you’ve ever been to that little curl on the tip of the Cape, you would know why.
Now, push away from your computer and go enjoy your Thanksgiving! See you in a few days.

Diane - What is the source that says values in Plymouth are down by only 1.2%? I find this very hard to believe as most of Massachusetts is down much more than that year over year!

The source is Zillow’s Home Value Report, which can be found here: http://www.zillow.com/quarterlies/QuarterlyReports.htm
This blog post explains some of the analysis: http://www.zillowblog.com/when-it-rains-it-pours/2007/11/
