Glendale AZ Brothers in Trouble over Haunted House
By: Diane Tuman, Content Manager | September 30, 2008
Before you sink $40,000 into making your house a haunted house, make sure your home owner’s association (HOA) or city ordinance allows you to do that. Otherwise, you could face a $2,500 per day fine from your HOA. Such is the case for the Ron and Brian Hutcherson, brothers from Glendale, Arizona, who spent two years turning Brian’s home into a haunted house and, in the process, racking up a bunch of HOA violations, such as:
- Erecting a big sign “Residence of Terror” on the front lawn
- Altering a community wall
- Opening the community gate to outsiders
- Charging admission to enter their house
The morale of the story is: Consult your HOA first, OR don’t live in an HOA community because usually the answer is “no.”

The HOA caved…the haunted house is opening this weekend. The HOA was wrong from the start, Ron called their bluff, got an attorney and it’s a done deal as of this morning. R.O.T. opens tomorrow night!
