Is there a theme to this celebrity house roundup? Is there a common thread between Ethel Kennedy, Allen Iverson, Kiefer Sutherland, William Randolph Hearst, and Mel Gibson? Nah — this is just a compilation of some interesting houses that are on the market or were recently removed from the market. Let’s dive in:

Ethel Kennedy’s house

If anyone is classified as American royalty, it’s the Kennedy family. And, next to the famed Kennedy compound in Hyannis, MA, the next most-famous Kennedy pad is this Hickory Hill estate in McLean, VA. It came into the Kennedy family in 1953 when John F. Kennedy and Jackie purchased it. They lived there until 1957 when they sold it to his brother, Bobby and wife, Ethel for the same price JFK and Jackie bought it for — $125,000. Ah, brotherly love. According to Big Time Listings, Hickory Hill has been listed for sale since 2003, starting out at $23 million, then lowered to $20 million, then $16.5 million and now $12.5 million. Why hasn’t this house, with it’s incredible history, sold? According to this Citizens for Responsibilty and Ethics in Washington (CREW) blog post:

Though it has since been reduced to a mere $16.5 million, the problem being not the Kennedy name but rather that, by McLean standards, the historic house is rather shabby. “You literally have to put five to ten [million] into it,” says one neighbor.
