And You Thought Your House Was Small? Ha!

I came across a contest on BusinessWeek’s Hot Property blog that I found fascinating — it’s a contest for the smallest, coolest apartments in 2007. Sponsored by Apartment Therapy and Design Within Reach, it really is quite amazing that so many people live in such small, albeit well-designed, confines. My current residence boasts about 1000 sq. ft. When I first moved in, 1,000 sq. ft. seemed quite big, but these days actually feels a bit too small. Clearly, this contest gave me a bit of a reality check, and maybe even some motivation to use my current square footage more efficiently.
The deadline for entries has passed, but you must check this out! I give props to Jake and Anne, who currently make 245 square feet actually look like somewhere I would like to hang out. And Elise and Byron, for convincing me that you could make 650 sq ft work with 2 kids (maybe!). My personal favorite is a cute little place in Boston (shown below), at 504 sq ft.
Less is more, right? Right!

WOW! Makes my 645 sq ft seem like a palace. Guess I’ll quit complaining.

Nothing wrong with people using Zillow to gether Real Estate Information. Giving values is an opinion and nothing is stopping you from going to an appraiser. Info is KIng.

I used to have a 325 square foot apartment in Boston, right near Fenway park. It was not charming, the stove and fridge were tiny… but it came with free heat, low rent (well, low for Boston), plenty of light, and proximity to everything I needed. Want to have friends over? There’s a bar down the street. And it was SO easy to clean– I had a miniature broom and dustpan to go with my miniature apartment. I loved it.
