A $16 Million Teardown = Heck of a Garage Sale

John Henry Mansion

Whoa, whoa, whoa. Word out of Boston — the Boston Herald, to be exact — is that Red Sox owner John Henry wants to tear down a mansion he just purchased in Brookline for $16 million. This guy paid $16 million dollars for a 13,000-square foot, 7 bed, 11 bathroom home and he’s going to demolish it? According to the article, the previous owners, Frank McCourt and his wife, Jamie, spent millions to renovate, but Henry wants to raze this 1930s home and start over in his own vision and style. The home looks enormous on Zillow. Evidently, this $16 million is just a few million less than the all-time highest Massachusetts purchase of $18.5M (yup, another Brookline mansion).

This should be one helluva garage sale, don’t you think?

Stumble it!

No, but that’s a great question! Frank McCourt, author of the Pulitzer Prize winning “Angela’s Ashes,” happens to have the same name as the Frank McCourt mentioned in this blog post. This “Frank” is a businessman and real estate developer who owns the LA Dodgers.

We have had some homes torn down here in Greenwich, CT that were quite expensive. If you spend any time here in town, you will see the architectural ego trips that are being built in the area. There have been some permits filed for 30,000 SF+ homes.
