Go Swimming With the Sharks at Gilbert Arenas’ $3.5M House in Virginia
Forget about appearances. Gilbert Arenas’ house may look like your typical Beltway estate, but wait until you see the quarry-sized outlays of flagstone, the Disney-esque swimming pool and the shark tank.
Yes, the shark tank.
Owned by the delightfully daffy NBA All-Star, this customized house at 10919 Georgetown Pike, Great Falls, VA 22066 came on the market in June for $3.5 million, but that only hints at the history of Arenas and his not-so-humble abode.
Arenas bought the place for $2.87 million in 2003 when he came to the Washington Wizards. In 2008, Arenas was granted a whopping $111 million contract extension. As his star and wallet grew, the seven-time All-Star upped the ante on the Great Falls manse by adding one of the biggest swimming pools this side of the summer Olympics.
Complete with grotto, hot tub, wet bar and water slide, the pool area was said to cost $1 million, according to the Washington Post.
Arenas lived in the 7-bedroom, 8.5-bathroom home up until two years ago, when he was traded to the Orlando Magic. That’s when things got interesting.
When he fled for Florida, Arenas left behind his former girlfriend, Laura Govan, the mother of his four kids and star of “Basketball Wives LA.” The pair had already been in the middle of a relationship meltdown, with Arenas accusing Govan of poisoning his sharks by dropping pennies into the tank that he paid $5,000 a month to maintain.
Fast forward to now: Arenas, who languished on the bench in Memphis last season, may be at the end of his NBA career. Hence the move to finally clean up the path left behind.
The listing is held by Donna Karpa of Long & Foster, which features a pretty cool virtual tour of Arenas’ home. It no longer has any furniture in it, since Govan allegedly cleaned out about $4 million in possessions in 2011.
But much like the real estate market, which can be a little volatile, the relationship between Arenas and Govan is on better footing. At last check, the couple had reunited.
