The former home of writer Truman Capote (“Breakfast at Tiffany’s” and “In Cold Blood”) and his partner, Jack Dunphy, was recently listed for sale by Sotheby’s International for $14.6 million, but was taken down soon after for reasons that are not known. Capote lived here from the 1960′s until his death in 1984. After Dunphy died in 1992, the saltbox-style home was bequeathed to the Nature Conservancy, who then sold it in 1993 to abstract-expressionist painter Ross Bleckner for $800,000, which is an amazing deal considering a house with deep history in one of the Hamptons’ most-desired real estate locales. It’s called “the Rubber House” and with good reason: it’s entirely wrapped with “a  thick skin of gray-black rubber” that was stretched over the wood-frame exterior. I don’t see “Goodyear,” or “Firestone” lettering appearing anywhere on the exterior, but you can’t help but leap to that ridiculous mental image. The rubber idea was commissioned by the home’s former owner choreographer Eugene Loring in 1981 — just one year before Loring died. Actor Willem Dafoe purchased the property, which is located in upstate NY (about 100 miles from NYC) in 2005. [Source: Wall Street Journal's Private Properties]
